For months I have been stopping to look at an Athena in a display cabinet at my local range on the way in and the way out. Desirous but, not worthy.
After shooting my normal 100rds slow, 50 fast (Ruger Mk II / Volquartsen 25yds) very nice affordable fun 3 times a week for many years I was feeling pretty good, a personal best tonight all under 4". As I checked out I noticed something familiar, OMG they added an Athena to the rental case. A WHAT? No Way! Look again! Yes it really is an Atlas Athena.
I had to ask, may I handle it? The Lady behind the counter instantly began an enthusiastic, passionate, near rant, about how much she loved shooting it on an employees night. When she was finally done she said yes, pulled the mag, showed it clear and handed it to me. Immediately a good day became a great day.
The weight, balance, grip, slide, trigger, sights, safety, mag release, all so natural. It was Heavenly to the touch. Think of Snap-On vs Matco but 10 times more. A great tool has an effect on you at first encounter and this is a beautifully crafted tool that exceeded expectations.
I know exactly what I doing on Monday night next week. I probably should have waited to write this until I got to fire it but my enthusiasm won over. It is truly a magical piece of craftsmanship. An hour after I got home I received a phone call offering me a new position with a large raise....if Monday goes as expected I know where that first pay increase is going.
