Matt Kitzmiller - The One Thing

[00:00:00.05]

- What's up guys, Matt

Kitzmiller with Atlas gun works.

[00:00:02.09]

So the question is what things

do I know now that I wish I

[00:00:07.00]

knew when I first started shooting.

[00:00:17.06]

So the first one is a question

that I get all the time,

[00:00:20.02]

which is 'how do I practice?' You know,

[00:00:22.09]

'How frequently do I practice?'

[00:00:24.00]

'How long are my practice sessions?'

[00:00:26.05]

The second one is 'how

do I manage recoil?'

[00:00:30.05]

And that's something that I

kind of learned the hard way.

[00:00:33.01]

It took me. I don't know,

[00:00:34.01]

four years now to kind of figure it out.

[00:00:35.09]

And I think I'm getting there.

[00:00:37.06]

So heading out to Rio

Salado and get some reps in.

[00:00:41.04]

Here we go.

[00:00:44.05]

- Alright, so you got your

gear, get to the range,

[00:00:47.09]

got all your ammo, your guns.

[00:00:50.00]

What do you do when you get here?

[00:00:51.08]

Simple. The same things that

you're practicing at the house,

[00:00:55.01]

right? I like to have

consistency between my dry fire,

[00:00:57.09]

my live fire all the time I wanted,

[00:01:00.01]

I want to get those repetitions

in and have that consistency

[00:01:03.08]

in. When I show up at the

range, I have a purpose,

[00:01:06.03]

whether I'm ramping up for

a major match coming up,

[00:01:09.03]

tackling some sites, some type of

[00:01:10.09]

deficiencies that I saw

in previous matches,

[00:01:13.07]

or maybe adding to something

that I'm already good at,

[00:01:16.03]

right? Honing on some of those strengths.

[00:01:18.02]

I have to have a purpose

when I get here. If I,

[00:01:19.08]

if I know I'm going to

Texas, then guess what?

[00:01:23.01]

I'm going to start practicing things that,

[00:01:24.09]

that I know I'm going to see there, right?

[00:01:26.02]

Those boys love to shoot,

you know, 90, 100 yard

[00:01:28.09]

pistol shots. So guess what?

[00:01:30.02]

When I'm at my home club,

[00:01:31.05]

when I'm at I'm at this

range here, I'm shooting 120

[00:01:35.02]

yard pistol shots, 130 yard pistol shots.

[00:01:37.05]

So when I see them at that

match, I'm not worried about it.

[00:01:41.03]

It's a cake walk, I've

done it a hundred times.

[00:01:43.00]

I've practiced harder than this.

[00:01:45.00]

It's not a concern like Josh

Taryn said that mental game is

[00:01:48.06]

on point and I'm not worried about it.

[00:01:50.08]

We have a way more things to

worry about how to match and to

[00:01:55.01]

manage than hard pistol shots.

[00:01:57.05]

So practice that when you're at home,

[00:01:59.05]

I'm keeping my round count low.

[00:02:01.09]

I'm not shooting 200 rounds to my pistol,

[00:02:04.00]

200 rounds through my shotgun. It's,

[00:02:06.07]

it's not something that I'm doing.

[00:02:07.08]

I'm shooting maybe 50

rounds from a pistol,

[00:02:09.04]

maybe 50 rounds to my shotgun.

[00:02:11.04]

I'm here for an hour, right?

[00:02:13.01]

Including setup and breakdown of whatever,

[00:02:15.03]

whatever array or whatever,

whatever stuff I'm shooting at.

[00:02:18.07]

So I'm not here for a long amount of time.

[00:02:21.02]

I'm not bringing myself to exhaustion.

[00:02:23.04]

And I'm sure as heck not going

to be here for 15 minutes.

[00:02:25.06]

So I try to stay in that

hour realm. Keep myself

[00:02:29.06]

honest while I'm here.

[00:02:31.00]

Those are the important things that,

[00:02:32.07]

that really like to say. That

I'd really wish I knew when,

[00:02:36.01]

when I first started shooting,

[00:02:38.07]

second one is, is recoil management.

[00:02:40.09]

So what we all want to do is

shoot faster and more accurate

[00:02:46.00]

or faster while maintaining

our current level of accuracy.

[00:02:49.04]

So to do that, we have to

have strong hands, right?

[00:02:53.01]

And there's only so much

you can do at a range,

[00:02:55.09]

that's going to build

stronger hands. So what now,

[00:03:00.02]

now we're thinking outside

of the shooting range,

[00:03:03.00]

and now we're looking at cross

training in a gym, right?

[00:03:06.00]

Or, or maybe your home gym.

[00:03:07.09]

The important thing there is

to make sure that you're doing

[00:03:11.04]

exercises that are strengthening

your hands, pull downs.

[00:03:15.00]

Those are huge, right?

[00:03:16.01]

Lat pull downs are something

that I love doing. Rowing.

[00:03:19.08]

I almost row every time I go to the gym,

[00:03:22.06]

2,000 meters at the middle

intensity and just nonstop.

[00:03:26.08]

And it sucks for about 10

minutes when you're done.

[00:03:28.09]

But guess what? 10 minutes

after 10 minutes goes by,

[00:03:31.07]

it's fine.

[00:03:33.00]

But most importantly, deadlifts.

Deadlifts really, really,

[00:03:36.04]

really add to grip strength.

If I'm not doing deadlifts,

[00:03:39.08]

I suffered my pistol,

in my pistol shooting.

[00:03:41.04]

If I am doing dead lifts,

[00:03:43.05]

that gun is staying in my hand

and it's moving when I tell

[00:03:46.02]

it to move.

[00:03:47.01]

And otherwise, it stays exactly

where it's supposed to be

[00:03:49.04]

returning to zero very, very quickly.

[00:03:52.02]

So those are the things that I

like to work on when it comes

[00:03:54.07]

to, you know, everyday life.

[00:03:57.02]

And there are two things that

I really wish that I knew when

[00:04:00.04]

I first started shooting.

[00:04:02.00]

Take care, have fun. Thanks for watching.
