Springfield Armory makes excellent entry-level double-stack 1911 handguns. However, a common theme with these firearms and others that use Springfield Prodigy magazines is that they have feeding issues.

In many instances, the only way to remedy these feeding problems is to break the weapon down, clean it, reassemble it, and try again. However, because 1911 and 2011 feeding issues are often because of the design of standard-issue magazines, this doesn't always solve the problem.

Common Feeding Issues With SF Prodigy Magazines

Here are some of the most common problems we've run into with Springfield Prodigy magazines.

Angled Bullets:

Bullets getting fed into the chamber at an upward angle are one of the most common problems with Prodigy mags. When this happens, it can cause a misfire or catastrophic failure, depending on how angled the bullet is.

Bullet Setback or Compression:

It's also possible that the follower or spring in the Prodigy 1911 and 2011 magazines can lead to bullet setback or compression. When this happens, the bullet gets pressed too deep within the cartridge and could cause feed problems. It's also possible in extreme cases that bullet setbacks can blow up your gun when you try to fire. While these instances are rare, especially in lower-pressure firearms, it's still possible and should be avoided.

Issues With the Spring:

Another common theme with these magazines is that the springs are wound extra tight, resulting in unwanted friction. In many cases, this friction is so extreme that it slows down the bolt enough to cause feeding issues. It's also possible that you hear a rattling sound when you're firing your weapon. This is likely because the spring tension is offset too much, which could lead to skipped or free rounds and feed problems.

Improperly Seated Magazine:

In some instances, the Prodigy magazines simply do not sit correctly upon insertion. This can result in the slide completely skipping over incoming rounds as you fire your weapon. While this problem may get better with time and use, it's extremely inconvenient when you want to try out your new handgun.

In addition to these issues, there are also complaints of extra wide feed lips on the magazines, the magazine catch being difficult to release, and magazines getting stuck or not fitting in the magwell. Regardless of the nature of the problem, they can all result in feed issues with your 1911 or 2011 firearm.

Which Atlas Magazines Are Compatible With the Prodigy?

Atlas Gunworks 2011 magazines are compatible with all modular grip double stack handguns, including the Springfield Prodigy DS, Staccato, and previous generation STIs.

It's important to note, however, that our 120 mm magazine is not compatible with SF Prodigy's due to the longer grip. As a result, the magazine is too short and cannot fully insert into the magwell.

Springfield Prodigy handguns are compatible with our 140mm magazines, 126mm magazines, and 170mm magazines.

It's also worth noting that although 126, 140, and 170 mm magazines fit all modular grip guns, there's a bit of mag hangout at the bottom of the magwell due to the length of the magazine. However, this is only an aesthetic factor and doesn't affect the performance of the gun. Here is a guide showing how each magazine will look in your SF Prodigy!
